Our students are growing up in a society that is increasingly dependent on data and computation, a dependence that often evolves invisibly, without any critical assessment or accountability. Journalism needs to adapt responsibly—finding and creating new kinds of stories that respond directly to this new societal condition.
In response, the Brown Institute for Media Innovation at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism is launching source:code, a weekly afterschool program offering high school students the opportunity to explore hybrid storytelling. Students in this program will merge code and data into a thoughtful, creative practice for observing and discussing the world around them. source:code will emphasize traditionally journalistic investigative work, but extend to include gathering, analyzing, writing about, and visualizing data.
